This version is adapted for beginners and intermediate French learners:
• Outdated vocabulary has been updated
• Passé-simple has been removed or replaced with passé-composé
• There are only two occurrences of subjunctive mood
• The number of reflexive verbs has been reduced.
The result: intermediate learners should be able to read this without too much difficulty. Hopefully, the reader will find that she or he is not translating but, instead, is thinking in French.
